We've finally reached the a la carte television utopia that we've dreamed of since the first cable TV companies invented bundling. And it turns out it's still kind of a nightmare. You've got a half-dozen streaming subscriptions, your shows and movies are all over the place, and there's no good way to organize them all. Well, until now. If you picked up one of Google’s new Chromecasts, there’s finally a decent way to keep track of everything you want to watch, no matter where it’s streaming.
Google's newest Chromecast marks a departure from the company's previous smart TV offerings, but re-entry into a crowded market. Now the dongle comes with an interface and remote control, allowing you to use it even without a phone, unlike previous Chromecast devices. You can still cast media to it from your phone like any other Chromecast, but it's not mandatory.
It also comes with a new interface called Google TV. This is based on Android TV, only some of which will be updated to Google TV, which means things will be confusing for a bit. If you've used existing Android TV devices like Nvidia's Shield TV, it should be pretty familiar. There are apps for Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, HBO Max, YouTube, and plenty more. Like Android TV, you can use the Google Assistant to search for movies and shows.
Unlike Android TV, though, Google TV has a Library tab. This is where you can find movies and TV shows you've bought or rented through the Google TV store (formerly Google Play Movies & TV) or YouTube. It also has a section for your Watchlist. And it's this feature that we're going to focus on today, because it ties into a system Google has had for a while, but that wasn't very useful until now.
In April of 2020, Google added a feature to it's search results called Watchlist. When searching for a movie or TV show, you could tap the Watchlist bookmark icon to add it to a list you could pull up later by searching for "my watchlist" or "what to watch." This was okay for remembering a movie you thought was interesting, but not much else.
Now, you can find your Watchlist in the Library tab on Google TV. Click on the movie or show and Google TV will suggest a way to watch it. And adding items to your watchlist is fast. In one test, I searched for a movie on my phone, tapped the Watchlist button, and by the time I looked up, it was already in my library on the Google TV.
