KARNAL: The air quality of Haryana’s seven cities and towns on Thursday slipped into ‘severe’ category, with Bahadurgarh town at 452 level— highest in the state—on the Air Quality Index (AQI), according to the Central Pollution Control Bureau (CPCB).

Bahadurgarh was followed by Gurgaon (443), Faridabad (436), Daruhera (434), Jind (427), Kaithal (422) and Fatehabad (416) — all in ‘severe’ zone.
As the AQI readings, the quality of air in Panipat (400), Rohtak (393), Sonipat 391, Manesar (388), Kurukshetra (377), Hisar (367), Charkhi Dadri (362) Ballabgarh (361), Ambala (350), Karnal (349) and Yamunanagar (344) was ‘very poor’.
The quality of air in four other cities—Sirsa (290), Panchkula (259), Narnaul (243) and Palwal (233)—was categorised as ‘poor’.
The air quality is measured in a 24-hour format, which is the average of AQI level from 4pm to 4pm the next day. The AQI level between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, and between 101 and 200 ‘moderate’. The level between 201 and 300 is classified as ‘poor’, 301 to 400 ‘very poor’ and beyond that it falls in the ‘severe’ category.
The total number of stubble burning incidents in the state was recorded at 6,581 for the September 25-November 4 period.
As per the data compiled by the Haryana State Pollution Control Board, Kaithal on Thursday topped the chart with maximum 1,223 fire incidents, followed by Karnal (986), Fatehabad (883), Kurukshetra (823), Ambala (974), Yamunanagar (445), Jind (546), Sirsa (294), Hisar (184) and Palwal (107).
