MUMBAI: The arguments before the Bombay HC today are likely to focus on the ‘closure report’ in Anvay Naik’s suicide case. While the prosecutor told the magistrate’s court on Wednesday that the probe was revived on a fresh complaint made by the widow of the deceased, Goswami’s lawyer said, “rightly or wrongly, the case was closed’’ and cannot be reopened without a court “nod”.
Suicide victim’s daughter moves high court against ‘arbitrary’ closure of case
Adnya Naik, daughter of late interior designer Anvay Naik, petitioned the Bombay high court on Thursday against “arbitrary closure” of the probe into his May 2018 suicide case. An abetment to suicide case had been then filed against Arnab Goswami and two others. Adnya wants it to be reopened and transferred to Mumbai crime branch or “any other independent agency.”
Adnya, a lawn tennis player, sought orders for “an inquiry against the investigating officers and judicial officers involved and punish them” for “botched up investigation.” She alleged that authorities have “deliberately fabricated records and have facilitated accused persons to get away from clutches of law.”
She alleged she had received “death threats” in May after she posted a video on social media to express her grievances and to her “shock” was informed by “an accused” that the case was “closed by Court in Alibaug.” Senior counsel Shirish Gupte appeared for her on Thursday in the HC.
Her petition said that they were informed her father and grandmother had committed suicide and after “much reluctance, the FIR was registered by Alibaug police inspector” with her mother Akshata as informant.
She alleged that the investigation officer in the case also “tried to obtain signatures” of Akshata, saying that the “FIR was filed falsely.” There was no communication from the police on the probe, and her mother followed the matter till March 2020, she said.
