A man posing as a citizen of the United Kingdom proposed a Ludhiana-based girl and later cheated her of Rs 5.50 lakh on the pretext of collecting a courier.
The Sarabha Nagar police registered a case against the key accused, Dev Kumar.
His aides, also booked in the case, are Chawnghming Thanga of Mizoram, Sunita, Mohaf Asif of Haryana, Asha Gurang of Uttar Pradesh and Mohd Alowdin of Delhi.
The complainant in the case Pawan Gupta of Rose Enclave told the police that she had made a profile on a matrimonial site. The accused Dev had liked her profile and contacted her.
In the recent past, the accused had started calling her and proposed her for marriage, the girl said. Believing the accused to be a citizen of the United Kingdom, she started talking to him.
The girl alleged that the accused had told her that he wanted to buy a plot in Ludhiana to build a house and after solemnising marriage with her, he would shift to Ludhiana.
“Recently, the accused had called me and asked me to collect a courier containing foreign currency he had sent to India. The key accused along with the other accused took Rs 5.50 lakh from me, but I didn’t receive any courier. Dev, along with the other accused, cheated me after hatching a conspiracy,” alleged the girl.
Investigation officer ASI Lakhwinder Masih said a case under various Sections of the IPC was registered against the accused and further probe was on in the matter.
