MANGALURU: The state unit of the BJP on Thursday resolved to push for an anti-love jihad law and bring back the anti-cow slaughter bill in the state. At its executive committee meeting in Mangaluru after 12 years, the core committee discussed religious conversion for marriage.
In his opening remarks at the annual meet, chief minister BS Yediyurappa mentioned that the government has taken serious cognisance of the love jihad debate and will tackle it.
Later, BJP state vice-president Arvind Limbavali said the committee had unanimously urged the government to enact legislation after discussing the issue with the bureaucracy and party. The committee also analysed polling data for the recently concluded RR Nagar and Sira assembly constituencies and four legislative council seats.
Panel analyses polling data
The BJP discussed bringing back the defunct anti-cow slaughter bill. Limbavali said: “The committee decided to revisit the Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Preservation Bill, 2010, which failed to get presidential nod. The subsequent Congress government led by Siddaramaiah scrapped the bill.”
He added that the committee felt this bill must be revived taking into consideration present-day realities.
The panel also analysed polling data for four legislative council seats, two each from teachers and graduates’ constituencies. BJP candidates and party-backed nominees for council polls will win easily, Limbavali said.
The committee discussed probables for the December 1 Rajya Sabha elections to replace the late Ashoka Gasti who died due to Covid-19 last month. “A shortlist will be sent to the central election committee through state BJP chief Nalin Kumar Kateel. It will take the final decision,” Limbavali said. The party decided to strengthen the cadre at training camps for GP elections.
