CHENNAI: Only one-third of people across different age groups and gender correctly wore masks while outdoors in the city, according to a survey conducted by the Greater Chennai Corporation and ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE).
The survey was conducted between October 16 and October 19 to assess if people wore masks correctly.
The team randomly selected 60 streets -- two streets each in slum and non-slum areas of all 15 zones. At each survey point, 30 consecutive individuals were observed twice a day -- in the morning (8am -10pm) and in the evening (4pm-6pm).
The team observed 3,600 people (1,800 individuals each in slum and non-slum areas). Nearly 72% of people in slums and 64% in non-slums did not wear masks covering nose and mouth, the team found.
Only one-third of people across different age groups and gender correctly wore masks while outdoors. The mask compliance was highest in non-slum regions of South Chennai (42%) and lowest in slums areas in North Chennai (23%).
The Greater Chennai Corporation has so far collected Rs 3 crore in penalties for non-compliance of Covid-19 protocols.
