Car reverses into cop, hits car with baby aboard at Gold Coast
A driver in an allegedly stolen car has reversed into a police officer, before hitting a Mercedes in which a six-week-old baby was a passenger.
Queensland police said officers were called after noon on Friday to a suspect vehicle, a Kia Optima allegedly stolen in October, on Elkhorn Avenue in Surfers Paradise after reports the car was being driven dangerously and running red lights.
The Kia was stopped in traffic on Thomas Drive at Chevron Island Bridge with a police car behind it, and an officer approached the vehicle on foot.
The driver drove off, hitting the side of the bridge then reversing into the police officer, injuring the officer's leg and arm, police said.
The Kia was driven west on Thomas Drive before it hit a black Mercedes SUV and a blue ute.
Police said two people fled the Kia, then members of the public performed a citizens' arrest on one while police caught the other.
The injured police officer was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital and the baby who had been in the Mercedes was treated by paramedics.
A 23-year-old and a 17-year-old are in police custody.
