MCG to identify garbage burning hotspots in Gurugram

16 challans have been issued since Oct 15 for garbage burning in the city
GURUGRAM: As the air quality continues to deteriorate, MCG has decided to map the garbage burning hotspots in the city.
The officials said that though garbage burning is a violation of the graded response action plan (GRAP) — that came into effect on October 15, only 16 challans worth Rs 80,000 have been issued so far.

“We have not been able to map the garbage burning spots, even though we have been issuing challans for the same violation. However, now our technical partners from the Centre of Science (CSE) are helping us identify and understand if there are any loopholes in the entire cycle of garbage collection,” said Chahat Sanghvi, consultant to the office of MCG commissioner.
On the less number of challans issued by MCG for garbage burning, an official said, “Since this is not representative of the true picture, we wish to geotag the garbage burning spots and it will be done over the next few days.”
MCG officials along with the CSE team visited areas in zone-2 of the city to identify garbage burning points.
The officials said that they found that a lot of horticulture waste is being burnt in the areas they visited on Thursday.
“Once these hotspots are mapped, MCG has to gear up for enforcement so that the issue is addressed immediately. Once these garbage burning points are mapped, MCG can plan information education communication (IEC) activities to make people aware about the problems caused by garbage burning. This is a very strong tool for changing behaviour of people,” said Abin Biswas, project coordinator for waste management, CSE.
