BJP to use protection of 'civilization' of Assam from Bangladeshi infiltration as poll issue in next state elections

GUWAHATI: In the coming assembly election due next spring, ruling BJP in Assam will go before the electorate with two issues—development and protection of ‘civilization of Assam’ from the ‘civilization of infiltrators from Bangladesh.’
BJP’s one of the key leaders and minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The soul has to be there in the body and so if there is development and no civilization, this cannot happen. I think BJP will go the polls with equal focus on these two issues.” He added, “But, obviously it is development which gives people the good feel.”
Continuing with his attack against the illegal migrants from Bangladesh, who he refers to as Mughals, Sarma said, “It would not be easier to send away these Mughals. To restrict them we will need delimitation, NRC exercise and we have to come forward to fight. The Mughals are deeply-rooted in our society.”
He added, “To uproot the Mughals from Assam five years is not enough. For the past 70 years the Congress let the Mughals enter Assam. In the past, when Mughals tried to enter Assam they were sent off from the borders. But Congress has brought them and facilitated their entry to the state assembly, the state machinery and into our culture. To uproot the modern Mughals the fight will be longer. We have reached some decisive levels. And I believe that if we put the pressure on for another five years it will be fine.”
Raising concern over illegal infiltration from Bangladesh, Sarma in the past few weeks has been saying that this “civilization” would now flourish and the present civilisation in Assam would be wiped out. He had also said that the invading civilisation will not recognise the great social reformer and saint Srimanta Sankardeva, but will go ahead to grab the land from his birthplace.
Referring to new AICC general secretary in charge of Assam Jitendra Singh’s claims that his party will form the next government in the state, Sarma said that Singh has been misled by his party colleagues in state just the way earlier in-charge Harish Rawat was. “I don’t blame Jitendra Singh. He is being misled. The present environment in Assam is of BJP winning 100 seats,” Sarma said.
