Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates dedicated Covid hospital in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inaugurated a state-of-the-art Covid Care Hospital at Kalapahar in Guwahati, which is expected to free other city hospitals from the rush of patients who have contracted the virus.
Considering the demand for dedicated hospitals for Covid treatment, the state health department has decided to close the TB Hospital at Kalapahar and convert it to a full-fledged Covid Care Hospital.
“It’s another milestone achieved by the Assam health department in its fight against the pandemic today. Extremely delighted to have inaugurated Kalapahar Covid Care Hospital,” said Himanta.
The Kalapahar Covid Care Hospital is a 160-bed hospital equipped with modern equipment and facilities such as ICU with oxygen support, ventilator facility, dialysis unit, laboratory and x-ray services, through which he said that the Covid patients will get 24x7 health services by specialists.
The Kalapahar Covid Care Hospital, is now an annexe of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). “While GMCH will continue to provide treatment for all other diseases, Kalapahar Covid Care Hospital will be a dedicated Covid care hospital equipped with all modern facilities and equipment,” read a statement by National Health Mission (NHM), Assam.
In the Kalapahar Covid Care Hospital, of the 160 beds, 120 are general beds and there are 40 ICU beds, along with separate cabins with attached bathrooms. The hospital will offer round-the-clock services by highly trained physicians, nurses and specialists from GMCH and super specialty hospital.
Other dignitaries present at the event were Samir K Sinha, principal secretary of the health and family welfare department, Anurag Goel, commissioner and secretary of the department, Dr Lakshmanan S, mission director of NHM, Assam, Dr AC Baishya, principal of GMCH and Pomi Baruah, OSD at NHM, Assam among others.
