WhatsApp to allow you to report a contact, but with chat messages

WhatsApp is testing a new feature, which will allow a user to report unwanted contacts on the app, but they will now be required to share recent chat messages with these accounts as proof. The feature is live on the 2.20.206.3 Android version of the app, and beta testers should see the feature live.

A user will be able to report both regular and business WhatsApp accounts if they are spammed or harassed on the messaging platform. The only difference is that WhatsApp now wants some evidence before it acts against any account. So if you choose to report an account, a message will say ‘Most recent messages from this user will be forwarded to WhatsApp.’

As per a fresh report by Wabetainfo, the Facebook-owned company will only take action against any account after properly verifying it.The feature is currently accessible to Android beta testers. The report explains that the messaging service “elaborates your report considering several factors.” The company first checks how many users have reported against the individual in concern. If the company finds several reports against a new WhatsApp number, then it will be blacklisted.

Currently if you receive a message from an unknown contact or business, WhatsApp just asks you to report, block or add the person to contacts. In the new update, WhatsApp will now ask you to submit a copy of recent messages from the chat to double verify if a report is correct or not. This will help the company analyse the situation better and take action accordingly.

When sharing a chat, this message will also appear: “WhatsApp never receives your messages without your permissions. If you decide to report a contact, you agree to forward a copy to WhatsApp of the recent messages from that chat.”

For groups, you get the option of exiting it and deleting all the messages. If you are reporting a particular individual, then you will be given an option to block the person and delete the chat. The feature will also be rolled out to iOS beta testers as well soon, though the official roll out to regular users will likely take some time.
