Seems like India is world’s largest democracy only on papers now, alleges Mehbooba

Seems like India is world’s largest democracy only on papers now, alleges Mehbooba

Srinagar, Nov 5 (UNI) Claiming that her party members, detained last week during a peaceful protest against new land laws in J&K, refused to sign an alleged ‘dictatorial affidavit that terms dissent as anti-national’, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday said that it ‘seems like India is the world’s largest democracy only on paper now’.

In which democracy is the right to peacefully protest an ‘anti national’ activity ? she asked.

“In which democracy is the right to peacefully protest an ‘anti national’ activity? PDP members detained last week for attempting to peacefully protest against news land laws in J&K Thursday refused to sign a dictatorial affidavit that terms dissent as anti national,” Ms Mehbooba wrote on micro-blogging site twitter.

“When will this deliberate attempt to conflate BJP with India stop ? she asked.

“How does disagreeing with BJPs communal & divisive actions tantamount to being an anti-national or sedition? Seems like India is the world’s largest democracy only on papers now,” she alleged.

She posted picture of a court order asking police to release the ‘accused’ on written surety bonds to the tune of Rs 10,000.

However, Ms Mehbooba also posted picture of an alleged affidavit which her party workers refused to sign. The paragraphs of the affidavit which the PDP president had highlighted read, “That we will not indulge myself in any unlawful anti-national activities.”

“That in case if we are found again indulging myself in any unlawful anti-national activities then I shall be liable to face any action as per law,” it added.
