Continuing their fight against environment degradation due to burning of agricultural waste such as paddy stubble, farmers of the area have started persuading other paddy growers to associate with ‘My Village My Responsibility’ campaign launched recently under the supervision of Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Ramvir and Ahmedgarh SDM Vikramjit Singh Panthey.
Farmers are being persuaded to attend training camps, workshops and demonstrations being organised by officials of the Agriculture Department.
The administration led by the DC had succeeded in roping in environmentalist farmers to join hands with government officials and social activists to shun the malpractice.
Jaswant Singh, Hardeep Singh, Randhir Singh, both residents of Bagrian village; Gurjit Singh, Narinder Singh and Surjan Singh, residents of Kup Kalan village, were among paddy cultivators who were recognised by the administration for motivating others to adopt alternative modes of agricultural wastes management and shun stubble burning.
The SDM said the coordinated movement to check stubble burning, launched under the supervision of the DC had received a positive response from farmers of the region. “Having realised deleterious effects of burning of agricultural wastes, more and more farmers have started supporting the movement launched,” said Panthey maintaining that the administration too had been felicitating the crusaders for gesture and concern shown by them.
Chief Agriculture Officer Dr Jaswinder Singh, DC Ramvir said the movement had been launched in pursuance of guidelines of the Punjab Government. “Checking stubble burning has emerged as a top priority this year in view of the pandemic as the air pollution and thermal fluctuations has been found to be deleterious for biotic and abiotic components of the environment,” said Ramvir.
The DC urged farmers of other localities to make optimum use of super seeder, happy seeder, mulcher and RMB plough for efficient management of agricultural wastes.
