Phil Foden recalled by England but no place for Mason Greenwood

Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden has been recalled by England for November's matches against the Republic of Ireland, Belgium and Iceland.

There is no place for Mason Greenwood, who with Foden was omitted from last month's squad after being sent home from Iceland in September for breaching coronavirus quarantine guidelines.

Forward Danny Ings and midfielder Kalvin Phillips miss out with injuries.

Chelsea's Reece James is also included after being sent off against Denmark.

The Chelsea defender will only be available for the friendly against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday, 12 November before serving a two-game suspension.

Foden's club-mate Raheem Sterling is also given an expected recall after missing the last set of international fixtures with a minor hamstring injury.

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire will be unavailable for the Nations League away game against Belgium on 15 November after also being dismissed against the Danes.

There is also no place in the 29-man squad for Leicester winger Harvey Barnes, who made his Three Lions debut as a 76th-minute substitute in October's 3-0 win over Wales.

England host Iceland in the Nations League on 18 November.

Foden back in the fold

Foden, who made his senior England debut in Iceland, has started the season in fine form for City.

With three goals in 11 appearances across all competitions, he has become increasingly influential for his club.

Referring to both the recall of Foden and Greenwood's omission, England manager Southgate said: "They don't come as a pair, they are individual players with their own strengths and individual talents.

"We are looking at the balance of the squad positionally firstly. Phil has had a lot of football with his club most recently and Mason has had less game time with Manchester United.

"I have had a good chat with (Manchester United manager) Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer) about his development and I feel it is better for him to stay at the club at the moment, to develop over the next few months.

"But they are both available, there was no carryover from September, that is done. Both are available for selection and are going to be very good players."

Not sure how on earth Maguire is keeping his spot in the squad after recent perfomances for club and country

How does Harry Winks keep getting into these squads? Doesn't even play for Tottenham so what football is Southgate seeing Winks play?

He started 31 games in the league and champions league last season for Tottenham last season and has already started 5 this season. Absolute nonsense to say he doesn’t play.
What is the point of playing the extra match they arranged against what at the moment is a very poor Rep of Ireland side? We will learn nothing from it, no manager will want their players involved in all 3 games and there's a pandemic going on! Stupid, really stupid

Why haven't you mentioned Jack Grealish ? Aston Villa is not the club I support, and last season I was unsure about Grealish. But this season I've changed my opinion. He's the most exciting England player to come along since Paul Gascoine. When fit and available, Grealish should be the first name on the team sheet for every game from now on.

Only my opinion but I'm surprised to see Maguire & Winks in the squad, and if the naughty boys are being forgiven then I'd have included Greenwood

Not worth watching England until we get a different manager with more exciting tactics and team selection. Unfortunately we will probably have to wait until after our next failure at a big tournament to see him relieved of his position.

I'm with you my interest in england disappeared many years ago. I like looking to see who gets selected and nothing changes. The fa and the manager play it safe as per usual, that's why we will never win the world cup

Reece James? So, no punishment from manager for pointlessly getting sent off?
Looks like he’s sticking with the back 3 which is a mistake as it’s not worked in any of the games it’s been used in. Made sense at the World Cup as many players were using that system at their clubs but they’re not now and especially with two holding midfielders it’s very negative for a team with an attack as good as anyone in world football.

Tammy Abraham isn't good enough yet true. I wonder if Calum Wilson was privately declared unavailable. I think Tammy will push on though to compete with DCL and Kane, thus should be kept deep within the England set-up. I think that Gareth Southgate envisages DCL as his no.1 striker in the next tournament.
Following Maguire's involvement in the comical goal last night, he should be barred from ever playing for England again
How Maguire is in this team, only one can guess. Remember how Terry was treated for something fractionally as bad?
