Severe storms barrel towards Brisbane with Ipswich, Logan also in firing line

Two severe thunderstorm cells are heading towards the south-east Queensland coast, with the Greater Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan and parts of the northern Gold Coast set to bear the brunt.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning for damaging winds and large hailstones.

Meteorologist Pieter Claassen said the two cells formed to the west of Brisbane, with one expected to hit Brisbane City and northern suburbs, the other was set to hit Ipswich, Logan and Gold Coast.

"We have a fast-moving trough moving across southern parts of Queensland today and now south-east Queensland this afternoon. These storms formed along that change line," he said.

"Beyond this, there is not much weather expected behind it.

"We expect a very brief period of rain with these storms, more likely intense rain to the south of Brisbane, but they are moving so quickly it is not likely to last 10 minutes or so."
