MUMBAI: The state added 5,505 Covid-19 cases and 300 fatalities on Wednesday, taking the total cases so far to 16,98,198 and death toll to 44,548. A state update said that of the 300 deaths, 125 were from Wednesday while 175 were added from Pune district as part of data reconciliation from previous days.
"These [175] were deaths that have occurred earlier but have been added to the progressive toll on Wednesday, of which 116 are from Pune rural area and 59 from the Pune corporation area," an official said.
For Monday and Tuesday, the state had sub-5,000 cases.
The city, after two consecutive days of reporting fewer than 800 positive cases, went on to report 983 cases, taking the tally to 2,60,840. It had reported 706 and 746 cases on Monday and Tuesday, respectively.
A municipal official said that the slight increase in positive cases could be because of variation in testing. "More testing centres have been opened up and people are encouraged to get tested early," the official said.
