US President Donald Trump's campaign has filed a lawsuit in Michigan to stop the counting of ballots in the presidential election.

"We have filed suit today in the Michigan Court of Claims to halt counting until meaningful access has been granted. We also demand to review those ballots which were opened and counted while we did not have meaningful access," the campaign of Trump said in a statement, news agency Reuters reported.

There is no clear presidential winner in the swing state, which has 16 electoral votes, according to Edison Research.

Republican Trump's opponent, Democrat Joe Biden, has a razor-thin margin in Michigan, where 92 per cent of the expected vote is in.

Earlier, Donald Trump said there will be lawsuits in states where the race is likely to be close. He wants a result by election night (there is no chance of all votes being counted, or even received, by November 3), and told reporters on Monday that “lawyers will be ready” on Tuesday night, to prevent the democrats from stealing the election.

The Trump campaign also sought recounting of votes in Wisconsin, which was won by Joe Biden.
