MUMBAI: After demands from teachers' in the state, school education minister Varsha Gaikwad said schools will break for Diwali vacations. The minister instructed schools not to hold exams during the festive season.

Teachers' groups had written to the minister demanding the government announce Diwali vacation dates. Teachers argued that with Covid-19 lockdown suspending physical classes, most did not get a break for summer vacations and online learning continued.

While most private and non-state board schools decide their own vacation dates, aided and government schools wait for government directives. The minister will meet the directors of education and decide on the vacation dates soon.
