‘Joining letter’ in hand, man reaches CBI office, finds he’s been cheated

Central Bureau of Investigation
GHAZIABAD: A youth was allegedly duped of Rs 15 lakh by a Haryana resident who promised him a job with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Police said, the youth, Nitesh Kumar, is a resident of Gurgaon and a complaint in the case had been lodged by the CBI in Ghaziabad. “The fraudster met the victim as a CBI inspector and told him that the government had given power to all high-ranking officer in CBI to appoint one person in the bureau under special reservation,” a police officer said.
The incident came to light on October 26 when Nitesh went to the CBI office in Ghaziabad to join as a sub-inspector (trainee). When officers asked for documents, Nitesh gave them a stapled bunch of four sheets. Rajeev Kumar Rishi, deputy superintendent of police, CBI Academy, Ghaziabad, who is also the course director for Batch XXIV of Trainee Sub-Inspectors, said the first sheet had a dated signature of the, SP, CBI (SCB), Thiruvananthapuram. “Above the signature, it seemed the page had part of some FIR. Below, there was an imprint of the national emblem,” he said.
“The first and second pages produced by Nitesh is part of an FIR (RC 5 (S)/2020) dated 1.9.2020, registered with CBI (SCB), Thiruvananthapuram. The first half of the first page looks like a colour print of the third page of the 18-page FIR. The second page is a colour print of the fifth page of the FIR. When I checked the list of candidates who had cleared the exam, Nitesh’s name was not there. He also did not have a joining letter,” the DSP said.
Later, Nitesh produced two “joining letters” one in his name and another in his brother-in-law Rawit Kumar’s name for the post of a lower division clerk in the CBI. “Nitesh showed us some more documents, purportedly issued by the ministry of home affairs, CBI headquarters, New Delhi and Staff Selection Commission. They all seemed to be fake. Nitesh said that one Ajeet Yadav, from Mahendergarh, Haryana, had given him the papers. Ajeet had told him he worked in the CBI as an inspector. All papers were handed over in the presence of Satish, a teamaker, who has a stall outside Bijwasan station, where Ajeet and Nitish would meet. They meet a few times between January and October,” the DCP said.
Asked about the money, Nitesh claimed, his father had interacted with Ajeet about it and he did not know the details. “The name of CBI has been misused. I informed senior CBI officers and the local police have lodged an FIR,” he said.
Ramanand Kushwaha, SP traffic, who is also SP (city 1), additional in-charge, said an FIR has been lodged against Ajeet under sections 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and others.
