NOIDA: On an average, some 10-15
Covid patients with comorbidities continue to get treatment in the non-corona wards of a few Covid hospitals in the district, including the Government Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) and private hospitals like Sharda, Yatharth and Fortis, even after subsequently testing negative.
The move to continue treatment for
comorbid negative patients has, in fact, been taken by the state government in order to bring down the case fatality rate in UP. The admission and treatment of such patients will, however, vary from a week to 10 days or more depending on individual recovery.
According to the October 10 order issued by additional chief secretary Rajneesh Dubey, all Covid negative patients with comorbidities would continue to get treatment for their ongoing comorbid condition or shifted to non-Covid hospitals — District
Hospital in Sector 30, in case of GB Nagar.
“We are following the government order, regarding stabilising comorbid patients before they are discharged. Of the 102 Covid patients currently admitted to GIMS, we have about 10 patients who have recovered from Covid but still are being treated for their comorbid conditions,” said Brigadier Dr RK Gupta (retd), the hospital director.
These patients at GIMS include two patients who have undergone dialysis, a couple of heart patients whom we have thrombolysed (a procedure used to break up abnormal blood clots that restrict blood flow in veins and arteries) and four patients who are still on oxygen dependence even after testing negative for Covid as their lungs have weakened due to earlier angioplasty, Gupta said.
Even private Covid hospitals are following the government order. Dr Ajit Kumar of Sharda hospital said that 13 such patients are currently under treatment for their comorbidities post-testing Covid negative.
“Three patients were diagnosed with diabetes during Covid treatment at Sharda hospital, they are still undergoing treatment to stabilise their sugar levels. Eight patients are coming regularly for dialysis, post
recovering from coronavirus. Also there are two cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy procedure post-Covid recovery at the hospital,” he said.
Similarly, at Yatharth hospital’s non-Covid facility in Greater Noida, 14 comorbid patients are currently undergoing treatment post-recovery from coronavirus. “Of the 14 such patients, we are treating two patients of renal transplant, one of liver transplant and two of heart bypass surgery. Also, we have four patients with chronic kidney disease currently on haemodialysis maintenance,” said Dr Sunil Kumar, the medical superintendent.
At Fortis hospital in Sector 62 Noida, Dr Rajesh Gupta, the additional director of pulmonology and critical care, told TOI that they also have about 10-11 comorbid patients currently admitted at
non-Covid wards. “All such patients will be treated till the time they recover and stabilise,” he said.
While government Covid hospitals will continue to treat such patients as per the Paul Committee fixed rates, private hospitals will have different rates.
