US Elections 2020: The US will choose between Joe Biden and Donald Trump. (File)
US President Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden are battling it out for the White House, with polls closed across the United States Tuesday -- and a long night of waiting for results in key battlegrounds on the cards.
The results are flowing in, with US media projecting wins for the Republican incumbent so far in 23 states including big prizes Florida and Texas, as well as Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Ohio -- all states he won in 2016.
Joe Biden has captured 18 states including his home state Delaware and big prizes California and New York, as well as the US capital. As with Donald Trump, so far, all states claimed by Biden were won by Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016.
So far, that gives Joe Biden 223 electoral votes and Donald Trump a maximum of 214, because Nebraska splits its electoral votes based on congressional district.
But a number of key battleground states are still up in the air, including Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The magic number of electoral votes is 270.
More than 100 million Americans cast their ballots in advance of Tuesday's Election Day, according to the US Elections Project watchdog, a record figure largely attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, reported news agency AFP.

Democrat Joe Biden To Speak At 0530 GMT Wednesday: Campaign
Democrat Joe Biden was to make a statement early Wednesday in his home city of Wilmington, his campaign said, with the White House hopeful locked in a tight race against US President Donald Trump.
Biden was to deliver remarks around 0530 GMT, hours after many polls across the country closed.
Several battleground states that were expected to decide the election winner were still up in the air, including Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Democrats Gather In Joe Biden's Home Town Ahead Of Speech
Supporters of White House hopeful Joe Biden began gathering nervously late Tuesday for an election night event like no other.
Shortly after 10:00 PM (0200 GMT Wednesday), a trickle of cars started to arrive for a socially distanced drive-in in the parking lot of the Chase Center in the Democrat's hometown.
Some 200 to 300 cars are expected for the event, where Biden and running mate Kamala Harris -- joined by their spouses Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff -- will address supporters from an outdoor stage.
With early projected results inconclusive, arrivals in the parking lot were slow. When people did arrive, they stood around anxiously watching results come in on giant screens.

Delaware, Vermont Elect First US Transgender State Legislators
Democratic candidates in the US states of Delaware and Vermont made history Tuesday when they became the first openly transgender legislators in their states.
Sarah McBride, 30, became Delaware's first trans senator, taking 86 percent of the vote in the state's first Senate district. She is also the first openly trans state senator in the United States and the highest-ranking trans official in the country.
"We did it. We won the general election. Thank you, thank you, thank you," she tweeted Tuesday night.
"I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too."
Further north in Vermont, Taylor Small, 26, became the state's first transgender representative, taking 43 percent and 41 percent of the vote in her two districts.
"5th trans legislator in the nation!" she tweeted.
Their wins come just a few years after Democrat Danica Roem became the first openly trans lawmaker in the US. Roem was elected to Virginia's state assembly in 2017.

Franklin County opts for paper poll books to check voters
As millions of US citizens cast their ballots for the Presidential elections, Franklin County, Ohio, which includes the city of Columbus, will use paper poll books to check voters in Tuesday, Franklin County Board of Elections Public Information Officer Aaron Sellers told CNN.
