U'khand HC directs govt to take action against encroachment by Parmarth Niketan Ashram

Nainital, Nov 3 (UNI) The Uttarakhand High Court on Tuesday directed the state government to take action against the head of Parmarth Niketan Ashram Swami Chidanand Saraswati, for encroachment and illegal construction in forest land in Birpur Khurd in Rishikesh, within November 23.
The court also asked the government to submit a status report in this regard on November 24.
The state government informed the court that the process was going on to remove the encroachment and a private company has been assigned to demolish the illegal construction in the 35 bigha of forest land within Dehradun forest division near Rajaji National Park.
Counsel Vivek Shukla, on behalf of petitioner Pauri Garhwal-based Archana Shukla, told the court that the Forest department, which was investigating the encroachment, has filed a case and also a charge sheet in this regard.
During the hearing on Monday, the court took a tough stand against the state government, asking how long it will take for action in an encroachment case after giving 24 hours time to reply.
As per the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Ms Shukla, 35 bighas of reserved forest land have been encroached by the Ashram, Apart from this, there was an illegal construction of 52 rooms, a large hall and a gau shala (cow shed) in the forest land.
Saraswati had earlier approached the Supreme Court against the High Court's order, to take action for encroachment, but the apex court provided no relief and referred the matter to the High Court.
