Punjab CM to stage dharna with MLAs at Delhi's Rajghat after President declines meeting request

After President Ram Nath Kovind declined a meeting with the delegation, headed by Amarinder Singh, over farm laws, the Punjab chief minister announced he will stage a dharna (protest) with his MLAs at Delhi's Rajghat on Wednesday.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has announced that he will stage a dharna (protest) with his MLAs at Delhi's Rajghat on Wednesday after President Ram Nath Kovind refused to meet the delegation, headed by the chief minister, over farm laws.

The Punjab Assembly had adopted a resolution rejecting the Centre's new farm laws and passed four bills to counter the contentious legislation enacted by Parliament. A delegation, headed by CM Amarinder Singh, had sought a meeting with President Ram Nath Kovind to request him to give his assent to the state's amended farm laws.

As the President declined a meeting request from Amarinder Singh, the Punjab chief minister announced that he and his MLAs would be holding relay dharna at Rajghat on Wednesday.

Before heading to Rajghat, all the Punjab ministers and MLAs would gather at Punjab Bhawan in New Delhi on Wednesday. Announcing the relay dharna at Rajghat, Caption Amarinder Singh said President Ram Nath Kovind's refusal to meet the Punjab ministers was "unconstitutional".

On the central government's order to not run goods trains in Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh said the situation in the state has become worrisome. He said the thermal plant is on the verge of closure due to the non-supply of coal.

Amarinder Singh also said the decision has affected the supply of essential commodities like fertilizer, urea, etc. for farmers. ON his decision to stage a dharna at Rajghat, Amarinder Singh appealed the MLAs from other parties in Punjab to accompany him to the protest site.
