The tourism industry of New Zealand has warmly welcomed Stuart Nash’s appointment as Tourism Minister of the country. However, he will have his work cut out for him as the industry us fighting with its long-drawn-out border close downs.
Also, Nash will manage the Economic and Regional Development, Forestry and Small Business portfolios. Tourism leaders explain that it’s a good fit with their industry; also they have cautioned that further support might be necessary.
Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) chief executive Chris Roberts have explained that it was quite satisfactory to see the portfolio remain at the hands of a senior minister, and previous experience of Mr. Nash would be priceless as the sector included thousands of small businesses.
TIA is keen to work with him on the recovery of tourism and Roberts stated that it needed additional information about border opening that when it was safe to do so.
“Just what are the conditions the Government will require for that to happen?”
Tourism Export Council chief executive Lynda Keene stated that her members would be feeling “pretty good” about Nash’s appointment.
”We feel pleased because there’s a natural marriage between economic and regional development, tourism and small business, because tourism touches every part of the economy.”
Keene explained that TEC would be handing over to the new minister with a recovery plan, and it would look for changes to the strategic tourism assets protection programme (Stapp) which proved controversial under former Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis.
