Govt thrusting laws on people that are against their existence, alleges Mehbooba

Srinagar, Nov 3 (UNI) Alleging that for the first time laws are being thrust upon people of J&K that are against their existence, former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Tuesday said that such actions will not be tolerated.

“The statement given by Principal Secretary Rohit Kansal on new land laws is factually incorrect. J&K was the first state in the country which implemented ‘land to tiller’… all the laws were emancipated and people friendly,” Ms Mehbooba told reporters after interacting with youth PDP leaders in Srinagar on Tuesday.

She said in the past people of J&K were being taken into confidence before passing any law. However, Ms Mehbooba said for the first time such laws are being imposed on people which are against their existence. “We will not tolerate such actions,” she added.

Answering a question whether the atmosphere is conducive for elections in J&K, Ms Mehbooba said polls are not a priority for her. “I have been saying it… elections will come and go… they (elections) are not a priority for me,” the PDP president said.

Ms Mehbooba said she is happy that the youth leaders of the party are steadfast in their resolve of taking forward the agenda of PDP. “It has always been an agenda of the PDP that J&K should not be a point of contention between neighbouring countries be it Pakistan or China,” she added.

The PDP president said at the end centre will have to adopt the formula to use J&K as a bridge between neighbouring countries.
