‘Baba ka Dhaba’ owner complains against fundraiser, alleges misappropriation of funds

Delhi Police has received a complaint against Gaurav Wasan, who posted the video of ‘Baba ka Dhaba’ and collected funds on behalf of the dhaba owner, alleging misappropriation of donations.

Kanta Prasad, owner of ‘Baba ka Dhaba’, in his complaint said that Wasan shot his video and posted it online and convinced the public to donate money. The video went viral and financial help poured in. Wasan mentioned his mobile number and bank account details as the owner did not have the same. But, he never revealed transaction details.

A senior police officer said that they have received the complaint and the case is under investigation. The complainant has alleged cheating, mischief, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and misappropriation of funds.

Mr. Prasad (80) had shot to fame after a video of him tearfully recounting the desperation of the months since the lockdown was shared widely across social media platforms recently.

Ironically, Mr. Prasad’s despair had come to light when Mr. Wasan captured the eatery owner breaking down as he talked about his struggles in a video shared on the Wasan’s social media account.

After the video went viral, Baba ka Dhaba was the cynosure of many eyes across the country, including celebs from showbiz who posted appeals asking people to go there and get themselves a meal.

A day after the heartbreaking video, #Babakadhaba was trending on Twitter and the food joint was flooded with more customers than it had seen in 30 years of being in business.
