  • Krugersdorp motorists were slowed down by heavy rain and hail over the weekend.
  • More rain with possible thundershowers are expected this week.
  • Cloudy conditions in Gauteng will clear up from Friday.

Heavy rain and hail in Gauteng slowed down motorists on the R28 in Krugersdorp over the weekend.

The weather service issued a yellow warning for heavy rain, leading to localised flooding over the weekend. Motorists were warned of increased travelling times due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.

South African Weather Services forecaster Wayne Venter said around 70mm of rainfall was measured in parts of Gauteng over the weekend, and more rain is expected for this week with a possibility of thundershowers on Monday evening.

Venter said rain will pick up again from Wednesday evening but, "it's difficult to see if severe storms will develop like they did over the weekend".

Venter added that cloudy conditions are expected to clear around Friday moving into the weekend.
