Amid Covid, Ludhiana's govt hospitals deliver

Pregnant women in a large number were infected with Covid during the pandemic and the thing to cheer amid the gloom is that not a single child was infected with the virus after birth.

Ludhiana district has topped the state in providing the maternal and child health services during the pandemic. This fact came to light during the submission of April-September report on mother and child. During April-September, 9,800 pregnant women were tested in various government hospitals of Ludhiana and the district has topped the state in conducting deliveries amid the crisis.

Deliveries of 96 covid positive women were conducted at the government hospitals of the district.

While giving information about maternal and child health services during Covid, Ludhiana Civil Surgeon Rajesh Kumar Bagga said a total of 9,800 pregnant women tested in various government hospitals of Ludhiana. Each of these pregnant women were tested for Covid and 179 women were found positive. Though in the difficult times when most of the health staff were busy in Covid duties, doctors and nurses of the department served the Covid infected pregnant women and conducted safe delivery of 55 women through the LSCS and 41 women delivered normally.

“Our health staff treated these pregnant women with utmost care. With the efforts of the health staff, Ludhiana district stands at number one in the delivery of the MCH services during the pandemic,” Dr Bagga said.

The government hospitals in the district had been continuing with their essential health services along with the fight against coronavirus. One of the essential services is the birth of a child, which could not be ignored, as reducing maternal mortality and infant mortality rate was the top priority of the department, Dr Bagga added.
