On Friday, a powerful earthquake of 7.0 magnitude struck Turkey and Greek Islands killing nearly 26 people and injuring more than 700. According to reports, the quake hit 14 kilometres (nine miles) off the Greek town of Karlovasi and caused a mini-tsunami on the Aegean island of Samos, heavily flooding the streets of a town in Turkey’s west coast. The earthquake was also followed by 196 aftershocks with nearly 23 hitting over magnitude 4.0.
Turkey’s western resort city, the Izmir province and Greek Islands were completely rattled with major damage caused to life and property. Several footages showcased city blocks turning into rubbles and as many as 20 buildings completely collapsed. Various apartments were also destroyed with interiors and appliances being spilled out on streets.
Reports also mentioned several cars being crushed with many stuck under the rubbles. Rescuers took help of residents and sniffer dogs and used chainsaws to force their way through the rubbles in order to pull out people stuck under. Residents were extremely panicked and left with teary eyes as they rushed out of their houses during the horrific disaster.
Rescue operations continue to be underway and scenes from the affected areas suggest that recorded casualties are likely to rise. Greece and Turkey are situated in one of the world’s most active earthquake zones with some of the world’s strongest earthquakes being registered along the fault line. The two neighboring countries also suffer from historically poor relations but the leaders have been hailed by the U.S. for supporting each other and offering condolences in time of crises.
