Hyderabad: Marking the commencement of the installation of Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), for the first time on Indian Railways, the South Central Railway (SCR) has successfully commissioned the project for a distance of 21.5 km between Umri and Sivungaon stations in Mudkhed – Secunderabad section of Hyderabad division.

TCAS is an indigenously designed automatic train protection system and was developed by Indian Railways in association with Indian manufacturers. This system is mainly aimed at preventing train accidents caused due to signal passed at danger (SPAD) by train and disobedience of train speed restrictions, by automatic application of the brakes if train operator fails to do so.

In addition, it helps avoid certain other collisions even in case of non-interlocked or non-signalled territory. It also provides assistance to loco pilots by means of real-time display of signalling related information such as movement authority, target speed, target distance and signal aspects in loco pilot’s cab.

During the development stage of the designed TCAS, the SCR conducted trials in association with RDSO, Lucknow between Lingampalli-Vikarabad-Wadi and Vikarabad-Bidar sections. On successful implementation, Railway Board has advised Zonal Railways to implement the project. Accordingly, on SCR, implementation of TCAS project has been sanctioned for a distance of 1,200 km between Manmad-Nanded-Secunderabad-Dhone-Guntakal and Bidar-Parli-Parbhani sections.

Loco trials have been successfully conducted with TCAS diesel loco and ensured that the system is functioning correctly. Display of all signal aspects in DMI, automatic whistling en route LC gates, speed supervision and SPAD prevention features have been effectively observed during the trials, a press release said.
