Alisha tricked us into getting Sushi as our pet: Rahman

Just before the lockdown was declared, when Rahman and his wife were returning home after a morning walk, a little squirrel accompanied them. “It just walked into the home with us and then we couldn't find it anywhere around,” he says.Later that night, his younger daughter, Alisha, found it in her room. “I don't know how it went to the right place. My Alisha has taken after me in her love for pets. Since childhood, she has been affectionate of animals, and feeds birds and animals on the roads. She is a bit of an animal activist,” he says. The family decided to keep the squirrel for a few days. “We named it Squeaky and all of us were getting enamoured with it. However, I used to keep reminding Alisha that it isn't good for the squirrel to be with humans as it will not then be equipped to live in the wilderness. So, we started leaving it on the balcony so that it could move around freely and one day, it did not return,” he says. Alisha was really upset about Squeaky's disappearance. Rahman says it was her year-long wish to have a pet. “Every time she’d ask me for one, I would postpone it with some excuse. Though I have raised a lot of pets at home before marriage, I couldn't have one at home for various reasons. My wife does namaz five times a day and my elder one is allergic to things like fur. So, many people advised me that it would not be good to have animals at home,” he says. After a few days of crying and complaining, one day, Alisha asked Rahman if she could keep a friend’s Persian cat at home for two days. “After much persuasion, we said okay,” he says. Thus, Sushi came home. “She managed to make all of us fall in love with her just two days after she was brought home. She was like a tiny baby, being only 28 days old, when she came home. So, we all were all playing with her and my wife started mothering her instantly. Soon Sushi became a part of our family,” he recollects. After a few days, Rahman and wife found out that the cat didn’t actually belong to a friend. It was just Alisha’s way of fulfilling her wish to have a pet. “She planned it along with her friend and convinced the pet shop guy that she would pay for it after a few days. We were all taken aback whenthe guy called us. By then, we were all attached to Sushi and I paid him. And now, Sushi has been with us for the past four months,” he says. Rahman grooms Sushi and his wife feeds her. “My daughters are the ones who pamper her. It’s like having a newborn at home. I have strict instructions from my daughters and wife on how to treat Sushi; no addressing her as ‘poocha’, no touching her with feet, the list goes on. My wife is the most attached to Sushi now. She even does her namaz keeping Sushi next to her,” he says. Life isn't the same when you have a pet at home, Rahman reflects. “Sushi is a source of great joy,” he sums up.
