Ludhiana, October 29

The Ludhiana police have decided to make the city begging-free in the next two weeks.

Police Commissioner Ludhiana Rakesh Agrawal has told the heads of all police stations to complete the verification of beggars within two weeks and make the city beggar-free.

“We have started an intense verification drive for beggars. We have given instructions to the SHOs to complete the verification of beggars in the next 15 days. After November 11, no beggar, particularly with children, should be seen on the city chowks or roads,” Rakesh Agrawal said.

He said that the police were determined to make the city beggar-free. We also request city residents not to give money or food to the beggars on roads. Every small effort would count towards this cause.

The CP felt that many beggars travel to Ludhiana during winter months to get blankets as Ludhiana residents are in the habit of donating blankets during cold nights. As per an estimate, a beggar collects 20-30 blankets in these two-three months.

“We need the cooperation of all to end this menace. We will be working with the civil administration, municipal corporation, health department, child welfare department and social security department as a team.”

Beggars who are found residing here for less than a year will be sent to their native places and those with disabilities will be shifted to shelter homes. Child beggars will be sent to child shelter homes. Others who are fit will be asked to earn their living by working somewhere, said the CP.

If you see a beggar on the road, take a picture and sent it to us at Ludhiana Police WhatsApp Number +919115601159. Now enough is enough and Ludhiana will be made a beggar-free city, said CP Agrawal.
