NEW DELHI: Jamia Millia Islamia will push for medical education in the coming years and it will collaborate with Jamia Hamdard University to introduce a programme in Unani medicine, said vice-chancellor Najma Akhtar on Thursday. Akhtar was participating in an event held to mark 100 years of the university.

The centenary celebrations, however, remained a low-key affair in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic and only some faculty members participated in it. The Jamia Tarana or the Jamia anthem was sung by Jamia school students in absence of the university students.

A documentary on Jamia with comments by personalities associated with the university, such as Sharmila Tagore and alumni like former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, filmmaker Kabeer Khan and former Indian Hockey player Devesh Chauhan, was screened on the occasion.

VC Akhtar said “Jamia Millia Islamia believes in philosophy of action, it casts sloth and laziness aside. This is the reason that it has been coming off with flying colours in achieving the latest educational aims and ideals set by the nation and the community”.

Stating that Jamia had embraced the idea of co-education, the vice-chancellor said that the university was planning more courses for the girl students.
