When BESIX Watpac started refurbishment works at the legendary Gabba Brisbane Cricket Ground back in February, no one imagined the fresh new look would be unveiled for an AFL Grand Final. Project Manager Owen Burford said “When we started back in February, we were expecting to debut at the T20 Cricket Grand Final. Now we’re on the really big stage with the AFL Grand Final, the first time it’s ever been played outside of Melbourne.”
The refurbishment has transformed the stadium. From totally new bars and eateries to new corporate and media areas, the changes are comprehensive. Perhaps most noticeable are the new entry gates complete with spectacular, variable colour LED lighting and video signage. This includes the enhancement to entry and ticketing areas for smoother entry and exit for fans
Coordinated by Stadiums Queensland, the refresh was designed by local Brisbane Architecture firm Populous, and reflects input from major users Brisbane Lions, AFL, Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket.
The AUD 35 million project supported up to 192 full time local jobs on-site and 80% of materials and equipment were locally sourced.
