The third quarter of 2020 was a good one for the global tablet market, with growth of 24.9% year-on-year taking shipments to 47.6 million units, the analyst firm IDC says, adding that the pandemic was a major driver in boosting the market.
The firm said people had been buying tablets to serve as an affordable means of accessing the Internet for their work, learning and leisure during the COVID-19 outbreak.
It pointed out that spending on other things like dining out, entertainment and travel had fallen during the pandemic.
Apple was the top vendor again, shipping 13.9 million units and recording year-on-year growth of 17.4%, with its best showing in the education sector.
Samsung was second with shipments of 9.4 million units and year-on-year growth of 89.2%

Amazon fell one rank, to third, with 5.4 million units shipped. In the third quarter of 2019, the company had taken the second position after Apple.

Now’s the Time for 400G Migration
The optical fibre community is anxiously awaiting the benefits that 400G capacity per wavelength will bring to existing and future fibre optic networks.
Nearly every business wants to leverage the latest in digital offerings to remain competitive in their respective markets and to provide support for fast and ever-increasing demands for data capacity. 400G is the answer.
Initial challenges are associated with supporting such project and upgrades to fulfil the promise of higher-capacity transport.
The foundation of optical networking infrastructure includes coherent optical transceivers and digital signal processing (DSP), mux/demux, ROADM, and optical amplifiers, all of which must be able to support 400G capacity.
With today’s proprietary power-hungry and high cost transceivers and DSP, how is migration to 400G networks going to be a viable option?
PacketLight's next-generation standardised solutions may be the answer. Click below to read the full article.
