The pits dug by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (Metro Water) in Velachery, which remained open despite the work getting over, were finally closed on Tuesday after DT Next highlighted how this official apathy posed risk to motorists and pedestrians especially during monsoon.

The road remain uneven after closing all the pits.
Chennai: According to residents of First Main Road inBhuvaneshwari Nagar in Velachery, Metro Water had started repair works on the distribution line more than a month ago. “For this, pits were dug at several spots on the road. Despite completing the works, the officials were refusing to close the pits. We were demanding them to close the pits, in vain,” a resident said.
On Tuesday, two days after this newspaper published a report, officials closed the pits with earthmovers. “It took only a few hours for the work to be completed,” the resident added.
However, the residents’ woes are not over yet. The road is now in a poor condition due to the utility work, said the resident, urging the Greater Chennai Corporation to relay the stretch before the Northeast monsoon picked up strength.
“Now the pits have been closed. But during rains, it will become difficult to ride or walk on the road. The civic body should repair the damaged portions soon,” urged residents.
