I couldn't ignore the cyberbullying after it began affecting my job: Yaami

On March 8, International Women's Day this year, photographer Yaami posted a few snaps from her photoshoot with Ullasam actress Pavithra Lakshmi, which featured the latter as an Indian bride with a pair of a scissors in a sari cut above the knees; she had captioned it, "Break the stereotype". Soon after that, Yaami's social media feed was flooded with abusive comments and it hasn't ceased even after six months."I did the photoshoot inspired by Amol Jadhav's photo series as I liked it because most of us aren't comfortable wearing sari and I feel we all should have the liberty to wear what we wish and like," says Yaami. After she shared the photo on Instagram in March, Yaami says, most of the comments were by Malayalis bodyshaming the model. "There were comments like her knee is dark and why didn't I photoshop it? I did not like these remarks and so deactivated the comment option from my posts. Then, people started flooding my inbox. After six months, I enabled the comments option and the cyberbullying restarted. On Twitter, someone is running a campaign against me claiming that I am a Christian and against Hinduism," she says. The photographer reveals she initially thought of ignoring the comments but she was forced to respond when it started affecting her job. "I wouldn't have cared if the messages were sent only to me. They have been mailing my clients and also messaging my friends and colleagues. This isn't fair. When I went to Wayanad for a photoshoot, my clients received a mail too. Most of the comments and messages call me a religious fanatic and someone who supports love jihad. Some even threatened an acid attack on me. One person even offered me Rs 1 lakh to delete the photo from my social media page," she says. The cyberbullies also attacked her over her previous photoshoot of a nun skating and hula hooping. "They ask me why didn't I cut the nun's dress and why am I not clicking a picture with anyone in a burkha? I was upset when the messages started reaching my clients and those who collaborated with me. Most of these are from fake accounts or from people from North India," she says.
