Sangrur Deputy Commissioner Ramvir has banned the stocking, display and sale of crackers at busy markets in the district except at spaces earmarked for the purpose. Timings for bursting crackers on various festivals have also been fixed.

Restrictions have been imposed as part of proactive measures to minimise air pollution, noise pollution and risk of accidental fires.

 Fact file

  • Permissible period for bursting crackers will be from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali and between 4 am-5 am and 9-10pm on Gurpurb. On Christmas and the New Year, fireworks will be allowed from 11.55 pm to 12.30 am.

The administration has observed that crackers and other fireworks are burnt every year on occasion of Diwali, Gurpurb, Christmas and New Year, which causes unwanted pollution. As the fear of accidental fire due to crackers and fireworks looms large during the festive season, regulation of manufacturing, storing and sale of crackers and fireworks becomes more crucial in public interest. “Moreover explosive materials are also being imported illegally, including potassium chlorite, which is very dangerous. It leads to the possibility of a big explosion which can cause loss of life and property. In view of Diwali, necessary efforts have to be taken to check the sale and stocking of explosive materials being brought from foreign countries,” reads an order passed by Additional Deputy Commissioner Anmol Singh Dhaliwal under section 144 of the CrPC.

Prohibitory orders allow sale of crackers at earmarked spaces from 10 am to 7.30 pm and bursting of crackers would be completely banned within a radius of 100 metres of hospitals and educational institutes. Permissible period for bursting crackers will be from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali and between 4 am-5 am and 9-10pm on Gurpurb. On Christmas and the New Year, fireworks would be allowed from 11.55 pm to 12.30 am. Sale of crackers will be allowed behind MGMN Senior Secondary School and Tubewell Number 2.
