Panaji: In view of the significant reduction in rainfall activity over most parts of the nation, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday declared withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the country.
There was no rainfall recorded in the last 24 hours and the reduction of water vapour in middle troposphere led to the withdrawal of monsoon.
Simultaneously, with the setting in of northeasterly winds in the lower tropospheric levels, the northeast monsoon rains have commenced over Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Monsoon spans the months from June to September. However, its withdrawal has extended to the second week of October in the last five years. Last year, monsoon withdrawal from Goa was declared on October 16, while it was October 6 in 2018, and as late as October 24 in 2017 and October 15 in 2016.
On Wednesday, clearing of weather led to a dip in the temperature in the state. The lowest minimum temperature of 24.6 degree Celsius was recorded at Mormugao.
Officials from the weather department said weather will be dry for the next five days. However, on October 31 and November 1, there will be light rainfall. There is no fishermen warning issued by the department.
Goa recorded the wettest monsoon this year with third highest daily average rainfall count since June 1. It also became the fourth state in the country to receive excess rainfall, of 41 per cent after Sikkim (66 per cent), Gujarat (59 per cent) and Telangana (42 per cent).
The state’s total excess rainfall previous year was 33 per cent for June-September monsoon season.
This year the state received rainfall of 4,203.7 mm between June 1 and September 30, three times more than India’s average for that period.
