Meant for tribal beneficiaries, huge stock of bug-infested rice seized in Thane

Thane, Oct 27 (UNI) Around 5,200 kg bug-infested rice was seized here on Tuesday from a supplier who intended to give the grains to the concerned authorities for distribution under the government scheme, stated the pro-tribal outfit Shramajivi Sanghatna.
Acting on a tip-off, a team comprising of Talathi Anita Gurav, Assistant Pen Project Officer P P Solaskar along with other officials swung into action and conducted 'panchnama' of the seized stock, apprised Sanghatna Raigadh Unit President Hiraman Naik.
Meant for distribution to the Katkari tribals in the Wakdi village of Panvel taluka, the said rice "was full of bugs and not fit for human consumption", he asserted. "Even animals will not eat them," he remarked.
He further said that the impounded grains had already been rejected once when they were distributed to the tribals in October start. Upon finding bugs crawling into the rice, the beneficiaries had strongly objected to such apathy and even resorted to agitation.
However, the supplier now again tried to expend the uneatable lot but the raid foiled his bid. In a similar incident in Vasai, the villagers have complained of receiving low-quality rice and further action is being initiated into the matter.
Commenting over the issue, Sanghatna founder Vivek Pandit told that he has recently met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in the same regards and approached the Collectors and FDA after today's incident.
