The Supreme Court deferred for two weeks the hearing on the petition of the Maharashtra government against the Bombay High Court order banning the investigation against journalist Arnab Goswami. Two FIRs were filed in connection with Arnab's remarks on the Palghar lynching case and overcrowding during the lockdown in Bandra, Mumbai. The investigation of these cases was stayed by the High Court.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde heard the Maharashtra government's petition on Monday. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the Maharashtra government, said that the June 30 order of the High Court should not send the message that some people are above the law.
To this, the bench said that no one is above the law, but some people are deliberately targeted. Some people need more protection. At the same time, senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Arnab, said that the FIR was not correct and a political party had filed a case in several states.
