Delhiites inhale "very poor" air; season's highest stubble fires recorded

New Delhi, Oct 27 (UNI) The Delhiites continued to suffer from toxic air on Tuesday as the Air Quality Index (AQI) remained "very poor" and furthermore season's highest 1,943 stubble fire counts were recorded.
According to Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) daily bulletin, Delhi recorded an AQI of 312 (very poor). For surrounding areas, AQI was 332 in Greater Noida, 306 in Gurugram, 318 in Faridabad, 320 in Noida; all four in the 'very poor' category.
An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'.All the readings for Delhi-NCR were under "red category" and such air quality can cause respiratory illness on prolonged exposure.
The System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) said the stubble burning contributed 23 per cent of total particulate matter in the National Capital's pollution with season's highest 1,943 stubble fire counts being recorded till Friday.
"The increase in local surface wind speed is a positive sign for today and tomorrow, but the impact of stubble related intrusion due to favorable North-Westerly boundary level wind direction is a negative sign", the air pollution monitoring agency stated.
On Monday, a top official from the Ministry of Environment had said that the Centre might bring new legislation to curb air pollution in the city and NCR, giving hopes to the residents.
Meanwhile, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature recorded on Tuesday was 32.4 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal, while the minimum was 14.4 degrees Celsius, two notches below par.
The relative humidity at 1730 hrs was recorded at 47 per cent. The sunrise was timed at 0629 hrs while sunset 1742 hrs.
While the National Capital witnessed mainly clear sky on Monday, it is forecast to have a misty Tuesday with maximum temperature likely to be 32 deg C and minimum 13.0 deg C.
