Ponda: Two persons, who were arrested in connection with cops’ assault case, have been booked by the Ponda police for alleged robbery of gold. As per police information, the duo along with another unknown person had allegedly relieved a Karnataka-based goldsmith of gold worth Rs 6 lakh during his visit to Ponda.

Police have booked the two persons based on a complaint lodged by the goldsmith and, in this matter, police have also managed to recover part of the stolen gold.

According to Ponda police, the incident had occurred on September 30 near Safa Masjid, Ponda, when the goldsmith Raju Verekar, a resident of Gadag-Karnataka, had visited Goa for the blessings of ‘Kuldevat’ at Mardol.  During the visit, the complainant had carried a shoulder bag with him and being a goldsmith, several types of gold jewellery were there in the bag, which the complainant had carried to showcase some latest designs to his customers in Ponda.

After visiting the temple at Mardol, the complainant had gone to Ponda market area and met some of his customers, did some shopping there and then proceeded to the old bus stand in Ponda to return to his native place. But after reaching there, the complainant learned that the bus to Karnataka leaves from the KTC bus stand in Ponda and not the old bus stand.

As the goldsmith started walking towards the KTC bus stand and reached near Safa Masjid, suddenly three people came on a scooter, stopped and assaulted the complainant with fist blows and slaps and then robbed him of all his belongings including his phone and bag and fled away, the police informed.

Left terrified by the incident and having no means of getting any help, the complainant went to the KTC bus stand and spent his night there and then went to his native place with the help of a bus conductor and narrated the incident to the family members.

On October 21, the complainant came across the photographs of the accused persons published in a newspaper, who were arrested for assaulting cops in Ponda.

Identifying them as the same persons who had robbed him in Ponda, the complainant soon contacted Ponda police and lodged a complaint with them.

As per the complainant, the accused stole gold ornaments including mangalsutra, chain and other items worth Rs 6 lakh.

Ponda police have registered an offence against the accused under Section 392 of IPC.

It may be recalled that Ponda police, last Tuesday night, had arrested Krishna Sherbahadur Khadka (30), a resident of Housing Board-Curti and Shubham alias Shubhu Sawant (26) from Panditwada for allegedly attacking two policemen with a glass bottle during a raid at Curti. Both accused were absconding after attacking the policemen on Monday, however, the following night they were nabbed while they were attempting to leave the state.

Both were previously booked under Sections 307, 323, 353 read with 34 of Indian Penal Code and were remanded to 5 days in police custody by Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Ponda

on Wednesday.
