18,600 USD worth Rs 13.7 lakh seized at airport

Chennai, Oct 26 (UNI) Officials of Customs Air Intelligence
Unit (AIU) on Monday seized 18,600 US Dollars valued at
Rs 13.7 lakh from a Dubai-bound passenger at the Anna
International airport here.
A release from the Office of Commissioner of Customs said
based on intelligence that foreign currencies were likely to
be smuggled out of India, a passenger Syed Ali (26) of
Chennai, heading for Dubai by Air India Express Flight was
intercepted after Immigration clearance at the departure
terminal.
On his personal search three bundles wrapped with black
adhesive tapes were recovered from his underwear.
On opening the bundles, 15,600 USD were recovered and
another 3,000 USD were recovered from the cigarette packet
which was kept in handbag.
In all USD 18,600 in 100 USD denomination equivalent to
Rs 13.7 lakh were seized under the Customs Act 1962 read
with F.E.M. (Export and Import of Currency) Regulations,
2015.
Further investigation is under progress.
