SC stays MP HC order of restricting physical campaigning for bypolls

New Delhi, Oct 26 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Madhya Pradesh High Court's order directing political parties to switch to virtual campaigning for the coming state Assembly bypolls.

The Election Commission (EC) had moved the Apex Court saying that conducting elections was in sole jurisdiction of the EC and that the state of Madhya Pradesh had no power to interfere.

Two separate pleas were filed by the EC and BJP Leader Pradyumn Singh Tomar which challenged the order of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

"We stay the Madhya Pradesh High court order," a bench of the Apex Court, headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar said.

The Apex Court asked the EC to take appropriate steps in view of the Covid pandemic situation.
