Woman fighting for life after being flung from carnival ride in Cairns

A young woman in her 20s is in a critical condition after being flung 30 metres from a carnival ride in Cairns.

The woman fell from the top of the ride, known as The Hangover, about 5.30pm on Saturday at the Cairns Showgrounds, the Queensland Ambulance Service said on Sunday.

At one stage, the young woman was stuck under the ride's machinery while it continued to operate, the QAS said.

"A female in her 20s fell approximately 30 metres from a structure and became entrapped," it said. "She was freed and treated for significant head and spinal injuries."

Workplace, Health and Safety examiners were called to the incident site on Saturday evening by Queensland Police.
