Meghalaya Health Minister tests positive for COVID-19, one more death

Shillong, Oct 25 (UNI) Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek is one among the 136 persons who has tested positive for COVID-19 on Sunday, health officials said.
Fifty-three-year-old Hek is the third legislator in Meghalaya to have contracted the viral infection. He had tested positive for COVID-19 through CB-NAAT.
“I have tested positive for COVID-19. Whilst I am fine, I am on self-isolation at my guest house. I request those who have come in contact with me recently to exercise self-quarantine,” Hek said.
The BJP legislator had arrived at Guwahati two days before returning to Shillong on October 19. He had met several Union Ministers, including Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Harsh Vardhan and his senior party leaders.
“I have quarantined myself for seven days from October 19 till today (Sunday)," he said, adding that his daugther who had also tested positive for COVID-19 has tested negative on Saturday, and was declared recovered.
Earlier, Power Minister and National People’s Party legislator, James Sangma was the first cabinet minister to have tested positive for the vurus. NPP legislators, Marcuise Marak and Esmatur Mominin.
Meanwhile, the death toll due to COVID-19 in Meghalaya rose to 81 after a 27-year-old woman succumbed to the virus on October 23 at North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
Director of Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said the deceased Manibala Debbarma, a resident of Sayadachara, Kumarghat, North Tripura, was admitted in NEIGRIHMS on October 19.
The active COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya stands at 1,605 with 136 persons tested positive for the viral infection, while another 104 patients have recovered, pushing the total number of recoveries up to 7,228.
Of the fresh cases, War said Ri-Bhoi district reported the maximum with 76, 39 in East Khasi Hills district, eight in West Garo Hills district, seven in East Jaintia Hills district, and three in North Garo Hills district, besides one each in South Garo Hills district, South West Garo Hills district and West Khasi Hills district.
He said 59 persons have contracted the virus in North East Police Academy.
Of the 104 new recovered cases, War said 73 patients have recovered from the viral flu in East Khasi Hills district, nine in West Garo Hills district, eight in East Jaintia Hills district, five in South Garo Hills district, two each in East Garo Hills district, North Garo Hills district, West Jaintia Hills district and West Khasi Hills district and one in Ri-Bhoi district.
