Storm warning in place for Sunday afternoon, with possible hail

A hailstorm warning has been issued for Sunday afternoon, with more storms expected to sweep through south-east Queensland on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the large front was beginning to bring storm activity to the Darling Downs, the northern edge of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and into Central Queensland.

Forecaster Michael Gray said there was a risk of an extreme thunderstorm and hail on Sunday afternoon.

"We are now just seeing a cell developing to the north of Gatton," Mr Gray said at about 11.40am. "And that is moving down toards the south-east."

He said it was difficult to tell if the Gatton storm cell included hailstones, but said a hailstone warning was included in a more general storm warning at 11am.

Four days of afternoon storms

Monday's weather activity would be calmed by different wind patterns travelling from the south-east, Mr Gray said. "Then back to Tuesday, when we are seeing potential storm conditions.

"We have had a series of upper troughs moving through the area and that is what gets those storms going and sustains them through the afternoon.

"We also have a lot of northerly air coming in down at the surface level, which brings in some more moisture, which is important for the storms."

Moist northerly air, coming from the Central Queensland coastline, is meeting a low-pressure system that has moved up from New South Wales, Mr Gray said. "And when those two things combine, we get several days in a row where we get this storm activity."

The bureau also predicted that wind speeds could increase to about 25km/h.

Overall, Mr Gray said the more extreme storms were likely to hit on Sunday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, with changing south-east wind conditions tempering the storm activity on Monday for 24 hours.

He said it was difficult to predict accurately beyond Wednesday but there "will be some instability hanging around".
