PROVIDENCE — Police are searching for a man who they say stole a car from a Cumberland Farms parking lot with a 2-month-old baby in the backseat Saturday.

The baby was later returned in his car seat at a storage facility near the Branch Avenue Cumberland Farms, Providence Police Major David Lapatin said. The child was found by a manager, apparently unharmed, police said.

The incident began Saturday afternoon when the boy’s parents pulled into the Cumberland Farms. They left the car running and went inside the store, Lapatin said. When they were gone, a man jumped into the driver’s seat and took off.

After leaving the boy at the storage facility, the man sped off, police said. The car was later found on Job Street, Lapatin said.

The incident remains under investigation, Lapatin said.
