Margao: Around 20 CCTV cameras were made operational on Sunday and launched at Margao’s town police station at the hands of South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat.
The development comes as part of the security building measures put in place in the wake of the murder of Margao-based jeweller Swapnil Walke.
On Sunday morning, while extending greetings on the occasion of Dussehra, Sardinha and Kamat launched the CCTV cameras in the presence of South Goa SP and other police officials.
Speaking to mediapersons after the launch, Sardinha said there is requirement of more such cameras, adding, he would work towards installing more CCTVs around the town.
“These CCTVs were installed under the MPLAD funds but were not maintained. Some of the CCTVs have been repaired and they have been inaugurated. This will go a long way in helping nab criminals in the city. We have also been informed that more such cameras need to be installed. We ask the police to maintain the CCTVs and make good use of the facility,” he said.
Kamat said that “during his last tenure as MP, Sardinha had, through the MP funds, ensured installation of CCTV cameras in many parts of Margao. The municipality was supposed to maintain them but unfortunately, they were not able to and the cameras got worn out. When the murder case happened in Margao we realised that the cameras were not being used to the extent that it should have been. After holding several meetings with the collector and other department officials, it was decided to remove all the cameras that were not functioning and the ones that were working to be restarted without spending too much money. Twenty cameras were repaired and we also prepared an estimate for around 70 more cameras that will cover the whole of Margao and I am sure that the MP will try his best to get these also.”
Kamat added that he hoped the security issues in the town would be addressed and thanked the residents in areas where the cameras have been installed for supporting in providing electricity to operate the CCTVs.
